Music and Movement for Kids: Simple Rhythm Games

Music and movement go hand in hand when children are invited to hear a rhythm and respond in their own way. Some want to march, some want to sway, and some enjoy being the conductor. Tiny Kaiju and Dopey Dragon's monster-themed tracks give families easy cues for creating a playful movement session at home.

Finding your monster-music moment

Use contrast to keep the activity interesting: loud and soft, quick and slow, move and pause. Announce one change at a time and give a demonstration. You can make the same game easier or harder by changing the number of moves rather than asking everyone to follow a complicated dance.

Try these ideas together

  1. 1

    March to the beat

Use The Silly Monster March for a simple left-right walking pattern, then switch to marching on the spot.

  2. 2

    Listen for a pause

During a song, lower the volume or pause briefly and ask everyone to become a still monster statue.

  3. 3

    Finish with a slow sway

Choose Best Friends Forever and sway or stretch arms gently as a contrast to the faster marching.
